Today was the last day for my coworker Doug, who I worked with in a 2-man team for two years on virtual firewalls, until I got transferred against my will.
I learned a lot from Doug, and I wish I’d taken the opportunity to learn a lot more, but because the service ran so smoothly there was often nothing to do, so I got distracted by more immediate interests.
The man is a huge store of knowledge about firewalls and networking, and his departure is a real loss. He was also fun to be around, despite often being crotchety and railing against the government too much.
When we said our goodbyes, I think we were both on the verge of getting a little misty-eyed. I’m gonna miss him.
On the upside, if I hadn’t been transferred, I’d be expected to fill his shoes, and I don’t think I’m up to the job. Those are big shoes to fill.
