Here's a quick how-to for getting your Vox entries to cross-post to LJ.

In Vox, go to Account -> Outside Services -> Your Other Blog, and enter your LJ account and password:

Once that's configured, each time you make a Vox post, you'll need to check the box at the bottom that says "Post a copy to LiveJournal."

Images and links will carry over to LJ, with the exception of LJ-specific html code, like and (A cut feature is in the works for Vox).

As reported earlier this morning by Gearjock, the Russian owners of LiveJournal, Sup, have laid off 20 of LJ's 28 employees, leaving only accountants and operations personnel. Product managers and engineers are all gone.

The Russian Bear slashes a social network

In the event that the worst happens, I HIGHLY recommend you backup your entire blog. You can use LJ's export service, here: http://www.livejournal.com/export.bml, but you have to do each month individually which is a pain in the ass and can take a long time if you've been blogging for years, like I have.

What I strongly recommend is a small program called LJArchive. It's Windows-only and requires .NET (which most of you probably have but is easily downloaded from Microsoft), but it very quickly and easily saves every LJ entry, comment, and user pic, and lets you view them offline as well as export them to several different journal viewers.

Now, none of this means that Sup will actually shut the thing down, but I don't trust them not to. I had serious misgivings when Six Apart sold the thing to Sup in the first place, and it seems they were on the mark.

In the meantime I may dust off my Vox account and start posting there (with cross-posting to LJ). Gearjock has already created an account there and joined my flist ("Neighborhood" in Vox).

It lacks some features I really like about LJ, like per-post user pics and mood settings, but in other ways it's much more customizable and media-intensive. If LJ goes down the drain maybe a mass migration over there is in order.

The other day (ok, a few weeks ago) I went back and read some of my very first blog entries, which were done on Blogger at the dawn of weblogs. I had completely forgotten about it until I was transferring all of my old IDs and passwords from my PDA to my Crackberry, and decided to see if it was still there.

While reading them, it was really obvious how much my writing style has changed over the years. My early entries were much more raw than they are now, because I was writing anonymously, if publicly. I certainly can’t say I censor myself now, per se, except where it’s prudent to protect my job, but I do craft most of my entries with an eye toward how it will read for my friends and passers-by. Some truly personal stuff I filter out, but there aren’t many of those entries.

It also made me consider the danger of putting so much of my life’s memories on remote hardware and software whose ownership has changed hands twice already, and is now owned by a Russian company. Not that I have anything against Russia; I’m sure the mobsters and proto-dictators who run the place are very nice people once you get to know them, but if their servers blow up, or get hacked, or are sold to buy rogue nukes for Chechnyan rebels, there goes a lot of myself that I’ve poured into those “pages”.

This makes it really tempting to grab the leather-bound journal Aaron once bought me, and a good pen, and leave my gift to posterity there but, if I did that, my inner attention whore wouldn’t have an audience. Really, isn’t that one of the main reasons we all do this? :oP

Anyone know if LJ has a backup option?

Dunno if folks will bother to click to Vox to read the entire thing. Not only that, but edits in Vox don't automatically update on LJ.
